Learning Opportunities
There are a range of learning opportunities available to support understanding and awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Opportunities include online learning, facilitated sessions, awareness events and development programmes designed to support individuals, teams and services.
Many learning resources are available through PKC Me Learning, alongside additional opportunities that can be tailored to local learning needs.
PKC Learn Modules (login required)
Equality Diversity and Inclusion – Mandatory for all staff. Provides an overview of what Equality, Diversity and Inclusion means, legislation and equality duty, working to promote equality, understanding barriers and challenging unacceptable language and behaviour.
Misgendering – Currently under development with Organisational Development. We are creating an e-learning module based on our Misgendering Best Practice Guide. Guidance about the correct use of pronouns, what misgendering is, how it can be avoided and how to support colleagues who have been misgendered.
Modern Slavery - What Modern Slavery is, why we need to be aware of human trafficking and modern slavery and the part we play to stop modern slavery and support victims.
Neurodiversity at PKC – overview of what neurodiversity means, the strengths of neurodiverse people, legislation, resources that may support neurodiverse employees, making reasonable adjustments, recruitment and how to support neurodiverse applicants.
Perth and Kinross, and Council of Sanctuary - Perth and Kinross Council was awarded Council of Sanctuary status in September 2024. This module provides an overview for staff about what it means.
Recruitment and Selection – Unconscious Bias. Covers what we mean by unconscious bias, how we think and our perception, stereotypes, patterns of association, different types of bias and why this matters.
Supporting Unpaid Carers at work - This guidance outlines the support available to employees of Perth and Kinross Council who have caring responsibilities. It is designed to explore the options available so employees can balance work and their caring commitments and continue to be effective in their role.
The Armed Forces Covenant – four modules about the Armed Forces Covenant explaining which groups make up the Armed Forces and why it is important to support their community.
Equalities Learning Programme
We offer a combination of in person and online sessions which any staff member can sign up for as well as training for specific teams when requested. The sessions are also offered to partner organisations/ groups. Some of the training is arranged more frequently according to need. If individual teams would like more targeted training, then please contact me by emailing MeganCampbell@pkc.gov.uk to discuss further. The sessions offered are detailed below:
Asylum Seekers Learning sessions
Delivered by Equalities Team. Sharing factual information about the Asylum population living in Perth, the support offered to aid integration and the impact of Anti-Asylum protests.
Beyond Religion and Belief
Delivered by the charity, Nil by Mouth. A discussion on how employees and employers approach issues around religion and belief in Scotland, with a focus on sectarianism and its impact on our society.
Countering Harmful Narratives
Delivered by Equalities Team and Show Racism the Red Card charity. The session looked at where harmful narratives come from, unconscious bias, misinformation, ethnocentrism, propaganda in the media and how to effectively challenge harmful narratives.
Deaf and BSL Awareness
Delivered by Deaf Links. A practical awareness session that helps people to have a better understanding of deaf people, their language and communication needs to break down the barriers for deaf people in practical ways.
Equality and Fairness Impact Assessment
Delivered by Equalities Team and Legal. An overview of the PKC Equality and Fairness Impact Assessment and when these should be carried out.
Gypsy/Traveller Cultural Competency
Delivered by MECOPP (Multi Ethnic Carers of People Project) and members of the Gypsy/Traveller Community. The training looks at the widely held perceptions of the Gypsy/Traveller lifestyle and culture and how we work with them in our everyday practice, including housing, education and health, in line with the Equalities Act 2010.
Hate Crime Strategy
Delivered by Equalities and Safer Communities Team members. Discusses Scotland’s Hate Crime Strategy and its possible impact on staff and communities.
Interfaith training
currently in communication with an organisation about providing this for staff.
HIV – Wise Up, Speak Up, Reach Out
Delivered by NHS. Participants gain an insight into the experience of living with a blood borne virus, and explore their role in providing practical and meaningful support, reducing stigma around HIV & BBVs and those living with them.
Human Rights Capability Project. Understanding the Value of Human Rights
Delivered by Aiden Flegg from Improvement Services. An opportunity to explore the relevance of human rights to everyday decision-making and to discuss, in practice, the challenges and opportunities this approach presents.
Islamophobia Awareness
Delivered by Muslim Engagement & Development (MEND). Explores the root causes of Islamophobia, the recent rise in attacks across Scotland and learn about how we can all take part in tackling this form of hate.
Jon Attenborough, Following Sam
talk from local author Jon Attenborough about his journey as a visually impaired football fan to raise awareness of the emotional and physical hurdles he overcame when visiting all football grounds in Scotland with his guide dog.
Why I wear the hijab
Delivered by two PKC colleagues, who are Muslim women, to raise awareness about the hijab and challenge stereotypes about Muslim women who choose to wear it. The session covered why they wear the Hijab, the different types of hijabs and the issue of oppression
Upcoming Events
Throughout the year we support and promote a range of events that encourage learning, discussion and awareness around equality, diversity and inclusion.
These events provide opportunities to hear different perspectives, share experiences and develop understanding of issues affecting diverse communities.
